Can Cheating be Blamed on Personality Type?
Several powerful professional athletes and public figures have been exposed in love triangles within the past few years:
– Kim Kardashian’s (below, left ) brief split in summer 2009 from professional NFL boyfriend Reggie Bush is rumored to have been from him cheating on her with Latin model Carmen Ortega.
- South Carolina governor Mark Sanford supposedly went to the Appalachian Trail a few days prior to Father’s Day without telling his wife, who reported him missing. A few days later, he was discovered in an airport coming in from a trip to Argentina, where he spent time with his long-term mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, a woman he had known for over eight years and wrote passionate love letters to.
- Retired NFL player Steve McNair (above with wife) was the victim of a murder-suicide committed by his 20-year old mistress Sahel Kazemi. Since his death, both his wife and the media have received reports of at least two lawsuits filed by other mistresses.
Many people wonder if it’s possible for a celebrity, professional athlete, or even a powerful politician to remain faithful to their devoted wives. Why do these men cheat on women who stand by their side?Many speculate that the reason powerful men cheat is simply because they can. Many argue that these men know that they can get away with their misbehavior, and therefore, see no reason for it not to continue. According to an article found in Newsweek, the real reason that powerful men tend to go astray is actually to be blamed on their specific personality type.
A personality type known as a Sensation Seeker was discovered and evaluated in the early 1970’s. The people who fit into this category often disregard risks for doing things and impulsively take what they want. They can often be reckless, and most of the time, they don’t even feel responsible for their actions. According to the article, there is a missing chemical in the brain, which would have reduced their “feel good” reactions to pleasurable stimulation.

Politicians, for example, some of the most powerful men in our great country, tend to get caught in the limelight more often than ever these days for trying to sneak in a little bit of inappropriate nookie. Even the former president, Bill Clinton was publicly chastised for his indiscretions while married to the former first lady, Hillary Clinton. Although Bill was forced to admit his wrongdoing, his wife stayed at his side through his infidelity and we all watched as she fought through her heartbreak to be a strong supporter for her husband in his time of need.
So, with such wonderful, compassionate and loyal women, why do men really choose to go wayward? It could be their personality type, or it could be some still undiscovered, broken gene that doesn’t allow for sound choices and fidelity. Whatever it is, we have got to find a way to get our guys in line or communicate about the triggers of infidelity.
